Online workshop – Before Reading Begins: the 6 skills that grow readers
Online workshop – Before Reading Begins: the 6 skills that grow readers
Scottish Book Trusts Early Years Training Team
Live interactive workshop: Tuesday 1 September 4.30-6pm
The online workshops are designed to be interactive with cameras and microphones on. Attendance will be needed on the day and the sessions will not be recorded.
Reading starts long before children recognise letters. In this practical, evidence-informed workshop, we’ll explore the six key pre-literacy skills that lay the foundations for reading, alongside picture books that support each skill, with practical ideas for using them, and explore why these early skills matter so much for children’s later success, confidence and enjoyment of books.
Designed for early years practitioners, teachers, childminders, family support workers, health visitors and parents, this session will connect research with real practice, helping you understand what really makes the difference in the early years.
This is a rich, engaging, evidence-informed session delivered in a friendly, accessible way that keeps early literacy joyful and meaningful.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the 6 pre-literacy skills and why they matter - participants will be able to explain the six key skills that underpin early reading and writing and describe how research shows these skills support children’s later literacy, confidence and enjoyment of books.
- Recognise and support early literacy in everyday practice - participants will learn how the 6 skills develop through talk, play, songs, and shared reading, and identify simple, practical ways to strengthen them in daily routines.
- Use picture books purposefully to grow early literacy skills - participants will leave with specific picture book recommendations and strategies for using books to support each pre-literacy skill, helping them choose and share stories with confidence and intention.
Audience
