Raising resilience: how music, rhythm and movement change biology

The human brain is amazing at keeping track of patterns. We need this capacity, from birth, if we are to make predictions about what will happen next in our world. As practitioners and parents, once we understand this basic principle of development, we begin to realise why music, rhythm and movement are so significant for babies. They are all based on patterns.

This day-long session with infant psychologist Dr Suzanne Zeedyk will give us a chance to explore this fascinating idea in-depth. 

We will reflect on the ways in which communicative exchanges are essentially jazz duets with other people. But are the beats of those exchanges comfortable or uncomfortable? That matters because comfort and discomfort shape the baby’s biology. Resilience is built by helping babies experience moments of discomfort without getting too overwhelmed. 

Come and join us for a day that promises to be full of insight, discovery and practical applications. A certificate and goody bag will be presented to all attendees of the training day.

Location

This event will be held at Scottish Book Trust offices in Edinburgh city centre – Sandeman House, Trunk’s Close, 55 High Street, EH1 1SR.
Registration from 9.30am.
There will be a chance to network with fellow practitioners, Dr Suzanne Zeedyk and Scottish Book Trust staff after the event.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please make us aware of any dietary requirements. 

Audience

This in-person training day is aimed at early years practitioners and those that work with young children.

Speaker

Dr Suzanne Zeedyk is a research scientist fascinated by babies’ innate capacity to connect. Since 1993, she has been based at the University of Dundee’s School of Psychology, where she still holds an honorary post.
In 2011, she established an independent consultancy that enabled her to work more closely with the public. Suzanne now spends her time speaking with organisations throughout the UK and internationally who are keen to explore how they can foster connection, compassion and resilience. Suzanne is delighted with the growing cultural awareness of relationships, and she believes such commitment is needed even more strongly as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic.
